Architecture Machines

The Creative Architecture Machines workshop will explore the efficacy of digital processes and their potential to contribute to a wider conversation about cities, technology and culture. Through the production of experimental and speculative Urban Mapping Machines, the workshop will endeavor to contribute to a wider debate within architecture about the role architects might play in a coming world where the lines between the digital and the physical are rapidly being blurred, and the effects of global climate change are becoming increasingly tangible and actionable. Workshop participants will prototype live and scripted robotic drawing machines that are capable of both real-time sensor-based drawings, and scripted urban drawings that are informed by open GIS data, and GPS-guided mobile robotic rovers.

California College of the Arts (CCA) San Francisco is the hub for design innovation and experimental architecture in the Bay Area. Its downtown campus is located in a 120m long former bus depot and is home to a world-class fabrication and digital design facility adjacent to its design studio spaces. The Digital Craft in Architecture Lab at CCA, coordinated by Prof. Jason Kelly Johnson, is focused on experimental research that explores the reciprocity and synergy between bits and atoms, the digital and the physical, and between digital code and material logic.
