Re-cording and De-coding Taichung

Taichung as a city is not third-world but never truly first-world; it is beyond developing but never feels developed. Being the third biggest and among the youngest cities in Taiwan, Taichung is in the midst of an identity search.

While most of the architecture presence in Taichung could be categorized as “post-modern”, we often overlook the fact that there was never a clear Modernist movement in Taiwan to begin with. Post-modernism is the Archetype.

How do we oppose the post-modernism that opposes nothing? Do we re-classify and re-modernize the city into contemporaneity? Is Taichung an accident, or can its appearance be meaningful? Can we decode its urban spatiality and re-code it into a prototype? Is it just some pedagogical cliche or is there truly something to learn from Taichung?
